Frequently asked questions
I have never done yoga or somatic yoga before. Is this course suitable for complete beginners?
Yes absolutely- this course is designed for you. You’ll have time to learn, to ask questions and receive feedback and I will guide you to move at your own pace and to meet your individual body’s needs with kindness and curiosity.
What is somatic yoga?
Due to my training, qualifications and experience, I integrate the teachings of yoga and somatic movement education. Somatic movement aims to release muscular tension through slow, mindful movement that creates ease and fluidity in the body and mind. We try to listen to the feedback from our bodies working within our capacity, moving from a grounded, centred, connected space rather than pushing into pain or performing a pose that feels stuck or rigid. By training our minds to become more present, our movement becomes more and more easeful and embodied.
What will we do over the six or four weeks and what happens if I miss a week?
Each week you will be introduced to foundational yoga and somatic movements that we will layer in week by week so that you develop confidence and competence as you become more and more familiar with the movements. You will also learn simple breathing, relaxation and meditation practices. You’ll have the opportunity to slow down, become more present, learn something new, make new friends, and hopefully leave feeling uplifted, energised, relaxed and calm. If you miss a week, don’t worry. You’ll have access to videos that you can practise at home and if you’d like to, you can join one of my timetabled weekly classes at no additional cost.
How do I get to Ebrington Village Hall and is there parking?
The address is Hidcote Road, Ebrington, GL55 6NA. Yes - there is a large free car park right beside the hall for your use.
What should I wear and do we practise barefoot?
Wear comfortable clothes and layers you can take off and put on. Yoga is usually practised barefoot. You can wear socks with grips on if you wish or whatever you feel comfortable and safe in.
What should I bring?
Water to drink, a blanket for relaxation at the end, warm layers that can be taken on and off. If you have your own mat, feel free to bring it but I have plenty of mats and equipment for you to borrow.
What if I have an injury or medical condition?
Please let me know if you have any medical conditions or injuries that could affect your ability to move, balance, get up and down off the ground, or be safe in a class that involves physical activity. I also teach Seated Yoga classes; if that might feel a more accessible class for you, please just let me know.
Do I need to book in advance and can I come along for a taster session?
Yes please book in advance as there are limited spaces. You can either book and pay online or email/call me and pay via bank transfer and I can book you in manually. You are very welcome to try a drop-in class from the classes on my weekly timetable before the course begins. There are no taster sessions as part of the course.
How much is the course and can I get a refund if I cancel my place or miss sessions?
The six week course costs £60.00 to be paid upfront - this secures your booking for the duration of the course. The four week course costs £40.00 to be paid upfront - this secures your booking for the duration of the course. This cost also includes access to professionally made videos for the duration of the course to deepen your learning at home. There are no refunds if you cancel or miss sessions.
What shall I expect to feel after class?
You’ll have the opportunity to slow down, become more present, learn something new, and hopefully leave feeling uplifted, energised, relaxed and calm. The most common response from my students at the end of a class when I ask them how they feel, is: I feel better! There are so many benefits to learning something new like somatic yoga, such as developing strength in body and mind, becoming more supple in body and mind, improving your balance, and cultivating deepening feelings of resilience. One of the best benefits I believe is making new yoga friends. There is a saying that friends who yoga together are friends forever. I love this and have experienced the truth of this in my own life and I would love for you to experience this too.
Please feel free to email (katedukeyoga@gmail.com) or call me (07949 531377) if you have any questions about the course. I am happy to help.
